How Dry Eye Disease Develops & How to Treat It

man with dry eye sneeze

Dry eye disease is an increasingly common eye condition that can happen either because the eye is not producing enough tears, or because tears are evaporating too quickly, leaving the eyes without enough moisture to function comfortably.

This can happen for several reasons including allergies, side effects from medications, hormonal changes, and illness.

Depending on the cause and exact symptoms of your dry eyes, our Rockford eye doctors will be able to prescribe treatments and medications aimed at increasing the amount of tears your eye produces and/or slowing the evaporation of tears to better hydrate your eyes.

What Are the Main Causes of Dry Eye?

  • Aging

Dry eye disease tends to affect people over the age of 50. This is because tear production slows as we age. As the lacrimal glands produce fewer tears, dry eye develops.

  • Hormonal changes

It's not uncommon for some women to experience dry eye symptoms during pregnancy, menopause, or while using birth control pills. That's because hormone imbalances can reduce tear production.

  • Autoimmune disease

Certain autoimmune diseases, like Sjögren’s syndrome, can cause white blood cells to attack your tear glands, thus reducing tear production. Other diseases like arthritis, lupus, and diabetes can also cause poor or insufficient tear production.

  • Medications

Certain medications can reduce mucus production (one of the 3 tear components) thus contributing to chronic dry eye.

They include antihistamines, antidepressants, diuretics, and beta-blockers.

Note that this is just a handful of causes. There are many other factors that can contribute to dry eye, including pollution and dry air, allergies, poor tear quality, dehydration, contact lens wear, and more.

During a routine exam I was greeted by friendly faces and rapid service. The tech ,Italiana, was fri... endly and very thorough ! She explained the testing and gave me her undivided attention with her care. Dr. Prayika Patel was prompt to ask for an additional test after noticing a troubling area in my right eye. She was comforting and clearly showed me what concerned her that day. She was professional but very caring. She discovered that I needed eye surgery and Italia followed up immediately by getting a date set for surgery before I left my appointment. I am so impressed with the level of care I experienced and I appreciate each of those who provided me with sight-saving care ! Thank you, Primary Eye Care !

Dr Kittle has been our family eye doctor for years. He is amazing. He is very kind and really cares ... about his patients. He is the most knowledgeable vision Doctor I have ever know. He always makes us feel comfortable during the exams and he has a fun sense of humor. He makes my sons comfortable by talking about Star Wars to help them relax during the exam. He is very patient. My son when younger had a vision condition that is uncommon and really was impacting his life. Other types of doctors were miss diagnosing him with other conditions but but Dr. Kittle found right away that his situation was due to his eyes. All my son needed was vision therapy and his condition he had is completely gone after the therapy. I have a neurological condition and I have had 2 brain surgeries and he understands how my condition effects my eyes. Plus I am very difficult to fit for contacts because of complex condition with my eyes but he had always been able to find contacts that work for me. Just this week I was having an issue with my eyes and he came in a half an hour earlier just to see me because he was double booked with patients that day. After the exam he did find my eyes did need treatment and I really appreciate him coming in to work early just to treat me before his day started. He is truly a great doctor. I highly recommend him. Technicians to do adjustments are awesome. I like them all and they are all very kind and professional. Victor is very kind and always greets me when I come in. I will always recommend anyone to go here. I would not go anywhere else.

Luke was an excellent optician to assist with selecting and ordering my new frames. He was even able to get my pair from last year that were broken covered under warranty. Great place for excellent care and customer service! Highly recommend!

The team at the Edgebrook Primary Eye Care center was no less than stupendous. I was taken care of b... y Dr. Hillmann and the young professional Chase. Dr. Hillmann is very clear and skips no detail when it comes to giving you the full information about your eyes. Any questions that you have about your eyes, Dr. Hillmann will answer with utmost confidence and intelligence. The center has a retina photo option - I highly recommend. I have not had access to such technology at my previous optometrists. This just shows how dedicated the team at Edgebrook is when it comes to getting the most out of your visit. The entire staff was friendly, professional, and confident when it came to running the tests on me. I recommend this place of business to anyone. To those who have poor vision (I have -8.5), those who are just getting glasses, and those who just don’t know where to go. You will walk out of there knowing that you were properly taken care of.

Dry Eyes FAQs

Can I still wear contact lenses if I have dry eye syndrome?

Yes, some people can still wear contact lenses with dry eye syndrome. However, depending on its severity, you may need to carefully select the adequate contact lens for optimal clarity and comfort.

Oftentimes, because contact lenses sit on the eye, it's difficult for vital oxygen to reach the eye. This can worsen dry eye symptoms, and increase the risk of scratching or otherwise damaging your eye. Make sure to ask your eye doctor which contact lenses are most adapted to your condition.

Can dry eye syndrome be cured?

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for dry eye syndrome. There are, however, many treatment options that offer lasting dry eye relief.

Can dry eye syndrome cause blindness?

In rare extreme cases, dry eye syndrome can cause corneal ulcers. These ulcers can result in scarring on the eye, making it difficult for the cornea to focus light accurately. If left untreated, corneal ulcers and the associated scarring can result in blindness.

How can I prevent dry eye symptoms?

Below are a few tips that will help prevent dry eye symptoms:

  • Point fans, heaters, and air vents so that they don’t directly blow into your eyes
  • Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids
  • Stay properly hydrated
  • Take breaks during long tasks, especially those that require extended visual focus
